Hello my name is Brooke, this is my first blog! The idea or intention of this blog would be to chronicle and share my experiences and inspirations as I pursue my passion for interior design. I have been a stay at home mom since the birth of my daughter 12 years ago. I also have a son, he is now 9. I always knew I would want to go back to work and since I have always LOVED interior design, I had hoped I would be able to find a way to go back to the interior design school I had started to take classes at before children. My husband hoped so too so I could stop redoing our homes and maybe make money instead of spending it! I thought when my youngest went to kindergarten I might start to take a class or two. The August before he started kindergarten we finally got a diagnosis ( we had started this process 9 months prior) that our son was dyslexic and dysgraphic. I had a conversation with my son’s neurologist that went something like this
“who in your family is dyslexic?”
“no one ” I replied
the neurologist responded “it’s hereditary, I am not asking you I am telling you someone in your family is dyslexic”.
Turns out it’s me. It explained so much! (you should expect misspellings from me going forward, spell check is great, but not perfect) I had always struggled in school, especially with reading and writing. That was 4 years ago. It has been a long journey, private tutors, homeschooling and driving hundreds of miles each week. My son is reading at a 6th grade level and at a school that is a fit for him for right now. Big exhale…
During this last 4 years the gift my son has given me is an understanding of who I am, and what dyslexia means. It effects 1 in 4-5 people. It is not seeing letters backwards as I had thought. Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, rather the brain taking an alternate route to decoding. Watching my son work so hard, his triumphs and his failures, inspired me to follow my dream. I took an online class at The New York School of Interior Design last spring, History of Styles 1, got an A, and I am currently taking an Interior Colors class online. I am learning a ton, and loving it. I have also been blessed with a great big crazy family, terrific friends and a not so boring life in the tri state area. So I thought chronicling my journey would be helpful in giving me that extra push and if even one person reads anything I post and it helps or inspires them it’s a win.
